Alexandria, Egypt, March 24, 2005 – Tournament favourites Egypt and Cameroon both won their opening matches on the first day of the 2006 Men’s World Championship second round tournament (Africa Pool B) over RD Congo and Sudan respectively on Thursday.

In the opening match of the tournament, Cameroon used the experience of their French based players to complete a convincing straight sets win (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) over first round winners Sudan, while Egypt had a comfortable (25-12, 25-11, 25-15) victory over RD Congo.

Cameroon started their match against Sudan with disciplined attacks, especially from middle player Sombang Tonemassa and wing spiker Elysee Ossosso. Sudan tried their best to keep pace but in the end Cameroon were too clinical.

“We started the match with little information about our opponent but little by little we knew we were the better side and in the end we achieved an easy victory,” Cameroon head coach Blaise Mayam said. “Moboulet Ndaki, Elesee Ossosso and Jean Nziemi were my best players.”

“My team had a big problem with their reception so that affected our offensive game,” Sudan head coach Alexander Karikov said. “Cameroon’s professionals were the difference in the end, especially libero Christian Guy, who was the man of the match in my opinion.”

In the second game on the opening day, Egyptian coach Veselin Vukovic used all of his squad as the tournament favourites proved far too strong for RD Congo. It was a comprehensive performance and the Serbian Vukovic will be delighted with his side’s opening performance in a tournament where the winner advances directly to the final round of the 2006 Men’s World Championship in Japan.

Day two of the 2006 Men’s World Championship second round tournament (Africa Pool B) sees Sudan play RD Congo and Egypt take on Cameroon in the match of the tournament on Friday.
