Three teams in second round contention in
Portugal - Belarus & Romania in “Sunday final” in

May 7, 2005 – Belarus, Slovenia & Austria all maintain a
chance of collecting the one ticket on offer to the
second round of the 2006 Women’s World Championship
following day four action on Saturday at the Europe Pool
B first round tournament in Santo Tirso, Portugal.
Meanwhile, on the second day at the 2006 Men’s World
Championship first round tournament (Europe Pool C) in
Tulcea, Romania, the home side and Belarus both
collected their second victories from as many matches to
set up a deciding match for the one available second
round ticket on Sunday.
In Portugal, Slovakia beat Belarus 3-1 (25-17, 24-26,
25-22, 25-22) to complete the tournament unbeaten with
four wins from four matches while Austria moved into
second round contention by beating Portugal 3-0 (25-20,

“We are very happy to win this match,” Austria coach Eva
Brodyova said. “I think we did a great job with our
service and blocking and that keeps us in contention for
the second round.”
With only one day remaining, second placed Belarus (two
wins) must now beat Portugal on Sunday to join Slovakia
(who have the bye) in the second round otherwise the
winner of the Slovenia v Austria match could usurp them.
Sunday sees Slovenia play Austria at 15:00 (GMT) before
winless Portugal take on Belarus at 17:00 (GMT).
In Romania, Belarus beat Norway 3-0 (25-15, 25-19,
25-23) before Romania sneaked past Belgium 3-2 (26-24,
28-26, 24-26, 24-26, 15-11) to set up a grand finale on
Sunday when the two unbeaten sides will play off for a
second round spot, which goes to the winner of the
tournament.
Belgium plays Norway on Sunday starting at 16:00 (local
time) before the big match of the day at 18:30 (local
time) between Belarus and Romania.
