2006 Men’s World Championships – Argentina
Argentina through to final round (FIVB)
05/08/2005
Mar del Plata, Argentina, May 8, 2005 – World number 8
Argentina became the fourth men’s team to book a spot in
the final round of the 2006 Men’s World Championship in
Japan after beating Paraguay 3-0 (25-7, 26-24, 25-21)
to win the South America Pool A first round tournament in
Mar del Plata on the final day on Sunday.
Argentina, who join hosts Japan, defending champions
Brazil and Egypt in the final round, finished the
three-team tournament unbeaten with two wins from two
matches, followed by Paraguay with a win and a loss and
Uruguay, who failed to win a match.
The light blues started very strongly, not giving
Paraguay a chance in the first set before the
Paraguayans improved their serving and reception,
forcing the second set to 26 points. However, the
experience of Argentina and libero Pablo Meana
inparticular, proved to be the difference as Argentina
wrapped up the victory in just over an hour.
"We could not maintain our same rhythm even though it
was a better match than the first game against Uruguay,”
Argentine coach Fabian Armoa said. “We made a lot of
unforced errors, in serving particularly. We are now
thinking of the tour by Cuba, which starts next Tuesday
with the goal of reaching the final round of the 2006
World Championships completely fulfilled."
South America has a total of two vacancies in the
24-strong final round with the other ticket being
decided in a first round tournament in Venezuela in
July, featuring the hosts, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
The next tournaments to feature in the 2006 Men’s World
Championship are a first round event (Europe Pool D)
in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary featuring the home side, Slovenia,
Moldova, Azerbaijan and a second round event (Europe
Pool E) in Varna, Bulgaria, featuring the hosts, Turkey,
Romania (who won a European first round tournament on
Sunday) and the Slovak Republic.
The next tournament to feature in the 2006 Women’s World
Championship is a first round event (NORCECA Pool C)
in Guatemala City, Guatemala from May 11-15, 2005 featuring
the hosts, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico where
the first two teams will advance to the second round.
