USOC Announces 2005 International Sports Invitational, June 7-12, featuring Volleyball (FIVB)

May 11, 2005, Colorado, USA – The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) announced on Wednesday the creation of the 2005 International Sports Invitational featuring the sports of Volleyball, basketball and softball. The competition will take place in San Diego and Chula Vista, California from June 7-12 and will feature 252 athletes from six countries.

The matches will offer excellent game time for all four teams ahead of the 2006 World Championships which start in August for USA (Norceca Pool D), July for the Netherlands (Europe Pool K) while Australia and China will start their World Championship campaigns on June 22 and June 24 respectively (Asia Pool F and E).

Men’s indoor Volleyball will take place at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the University of San Diego campus and will feature the USA men’s national team as well as teams from China, Australia and the Netherlands. Preliminary competition in the Volleyball event will be on Wednesday June 8, Thursday June 9 and Friday June 10, with the four teams competing in a round-robin format. The tournament semifinals (No. 1 seed vs. No. 4 seed; No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed) will be on Saturday June 11, while the third-place and championship matches are scheduled for Sunday, June 12.
