Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 12, 2005 – A thrilling five set 25-20, 9-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-13 win by Guatemala over Nicaragua saw the home side jump to the top of the five-team table at the 2006 Women’s World Championship first round tournament – Norceca Pool C on Thursday. With the top two teams advancing to the second round and Mexico, who have won one match from as many games, having the bye and Honduras defeating Panama 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21) for their first victory of the tournament, Guatemala now sit alone with two wins from two matches.

Guatemala’s victory was a repetition of a match last November when the Guatemalans edged Nicaragua on their own soil also in five sets during the Central American Tournament. This time Ana Ramirez, with 22 points, was the top scorer and the sparkplug behind Guatemala’s incredible performance. She led four players into double figures that included Diana Arias(14), Analisse Burmester(12) and Maria Orellana(10).

Nicaragua’s Heidy Trana led all scorers with 26 points, giving her 36 in two matches and leaving her only behind Honduras’ Caterine Leiva, who with 39, is the tournament’s top scorer.

“The victory reflects the good work and the support of our Federation,” Guatemala coach David Aldana, who saw his side beat Honduras comfortably on the first day, said. “Both teams showed their potential, it was a very intense match which could have gone either way.”

Meanwhile, a better service game and superior attack helped Honduras record their first win off the tournament. Once again the star for Honduras was Leiva, who led her side with 23 points, followed by Aida Delgado with 22 and Veis Inestroza with 14 points. Sileiny Arauz topped Panama’s scoring with 12 points while Jazmin Rojas added 11.

“The hard work is starting to bear fruit, especially with our attacking serves which caused a lot of problems for Panama,” Honduras coach Walter Montes said. “Caterine Leiva had a great game down the middle and I am very happy with the job of our young players.”

Day three of the 2006 Women’s World Championship first round tournament - Norceca Pool C sees Panama take on Nicaragua at 18:00 (local time) followed by what is expected to be the match of the tournament, Guatemala v Mexico at 20:00. Honduras has the bye.

Friday also sees two tournaments feature in the 2006 Men’s World Championship with a first round event (Europe Pool D) in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary featuring the home side, Slovenia, Moldova, Azerbaijan and a second round event (Europe Pool E) in Varna, Bulgaria, where the hosts, Turkey and the Slovak Republic will play for a chance to advance to the third round.
