May
24, 2005 - Trinidad and Tobago's male Volleyballers will
tackle Anguilla on the opening night of the 2006 World
Championship first round tournament - Norceca Group B at
the Sports & Physical Education Centre (SPEC) on the St
Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies on
Wednesday.
The hosts are the overwhelming favourites to win the
five-team round-robin group and move a step closer to
reaching the final round of the 2006 World Championships
in Japan in November next year.
Dominica, St Lucia and St Kitts & Nevis are the other
teams in the group and only the winner will advance to
the second round, to oppose hosts Cuba, Canada, Panama
and Costa Rica in mid-August.
The top two teams from Group E will then book their
spots in the final round, along with the top two sides
from Group D.
Puerto Rico will host the Group D competition at the end
of August and will be facing Mexico, the United States
and Guatemala and winners of Group A, which consists of
Barbados, Netherland Antilles, Jamaica, Cayman Islands
and United States Virgin Islands.
The opening ceremony will precede the 8pm (local time)
T&T/Anguilla contest, which will not be the first match
of the tournament as St Lucia and Dominica square off
four hours earlier.
The home team will return to the court the following
night-Thursday to face St Kitts & Nevis and then after a
rest day they will tackle St Lucia and Dominica,
respectively, on the final two nights of the tournament,
which concludes on Sunday.
Eighteen local players had been training four days a
week in preparation for the tournament before the squad
was trimmed to 12. These dozen players have been in a
live-in camp, with coach Gideon Dickson and his
assistant David Camacho.
Nolan Tash, the top attacking player in the last two
Caribbean Championships, Vaughn Martin and Saleem Ali,
the best libero and setter, respectively, last year in
regional competition, are in the squad, along with
former skipper Mark Daly and Sean Morrison.
