2006 Men's World Championship - Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago through to second round (FIVB)
05/29/2005
Port
of Spain, Trinidad, May 29, 2005 – Trinidad & Tobago
achieved their goal and confirmed their favouritism at
the 2006 Men’s World Championship first round tournament
- Norceca Pool B by winning the tournament on Sunday
after collecting their fourth straight victory with a
3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-15) win over Dominica.
The victory sets Trinidad & Tobago, who only conceded
one set all tournament, up with a second round
appointment with Panama, Canada, Cuba and Costa Rica in
Ciudad Habana in August where two final round tickets
will be up for grabs.
For Trinidad & Tobago, Nolan Tash was again the star
with 21 points and Sean Morrison and Mark Daly added 11
and 10 respectively. Captain David Toussaint was the top
scorer for Dominica with 10 points.
Trinidad & Tobago showed in the first set why they
finished the competition with an unbeaten record. Tash
once again was the main force for the hosts with potent
spikes benefiting from the setting of Saleem Ali. In the
second set, Dominica responded only to lose momentum at
the latter stages while the third set saw the
Trinidadians dominate and cruise to victory amongst
great celebration after winning the ticket to the second
round in Havana.
“The guys showed a lot of depth and character and I
appreciate the position of going into the next round as
the dark horse,” Trinidad & Tobago captain Tash said. “I
love being the underdog because I believe the team has
the ability to perform.”
Gideon Dickson, coach of Trinidad & Tobago, said: “We
knew from the first set that we were going to move on
from this round. For the next phase, when my side
performs, the better team will have to win the match. We
are going out there to play our very best.”
Meanwhile, St. Kitts & Nevis finished the tournament
with a 2-2 record in third place after battling through
five sets before beating winless Anguilla 3-2 (23-25,
25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 15-13). Dominica finished fourth
with one victory.
Unsurprisingly, the very talented Tash, who led Trinidad & Tobago into the
second round with some spackling performances, was elected as the Most Valuable
Player of the event.
“I don’t think this was my best ever performance, but I
rather prefer this type of performance and the victory
of my team,” he said after the closing ceremony. “But I
like the spotlight and it was very nice to enjoy the
support of the fans.”
The rest of the All-Star team was completed by the
following: Best Defense and Libero; Kemoroy Percival
(SKN), Best Setter; Saleem Ali (TRI), Best Receiver;
Martin Vaughn (TRI), Best Blocker; Sherwin Richardson
(AGU), Best Spiker; Sean Morrison (TRI), Best Server;
