Dubai,
United Arab Emirates, June 1, 2005 - Hosts United Arab
Emirates downed Maldives in straight sets (25-15, 25-19,
25-18) on Wednesday to join Qatar, unbeaten at the top
of the five-team table, at the 2006 Men's World
Championship first round tournament - Asia Pool A.
UAE beat winless Maldives for their third successive
victory for six points while Jordan also defeated Oman
on Wednesday 3-0 (25-27, 25-19, 25-19) to record their
second victory out of four matches. However, despite
their victory, Jordan, who have a bye on Thursday’s
final day, can go no higher than third place, and have
lost the opportunity to claim a ticket through to the
second round, which goes to the two top place getters.
United Arab Emirates will meet Qatar, who have also
earned six points from three matches with no defeats, in
the final match to decide which team tops the group.
However, both teams are confirmed in the second round.
The top two teams from Pool A which draws five teams
from United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Maldives and
Oman, will enter the second round with the winner
participating in Asia Pool F together with Australia,
Iran, and Uzbekistan (who advanced from first round Asia
Pool B) which is to be held in Iran from June 22-24. The
runner’s up will go to Kazakhstan to take part in the
Asia Pool D competition with Korea, Kazakhstan and
Chinese Taipei (winner of first round tournament - Asia
Pool C) from June 17-19 in Kazakhstan.
