Qatar beat the hosts to claim tournament honours(FIVB)

Qatar won the 2006 Men’s World Championship first round
tournament – Asia Pool A after beating the United Arab
Emirates in a five-set thriller 3-2 (20-25, 25-22,
20-25, 25-18, 15-11) on Thursday. Both sides were
already confirmed as the two sides who would advance
through to the second round but Thursday’s deciding
match determined which second round tournament each side
would play in.
As winner’s of the tournament with four victories from
as many games, Qatar will now head to Teheran, Iran for
a second round tournament from June 22-24 featuring the
hosts, Australia and another first round advancer
Uzbekistan, who finished second in Group B.
The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, who won three
matches and lost one, will play Kazakhstan, Korea and
Chinese Taipei, who won Group C in the first round, in
the Kazakhstan city of Almaty from June 17-19.
Both tournaments offer a ticket through to the final
round, while the second placed teams will go into a
playoff tournament for two extra tickets.
The other match on the final day in Dubai saw Oman claim
fourth place in the tournament after defeating the
Maldives 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22) for their
first victory. Jordan had the bye.
