Six Asian teams advance to second round of Men’s World Championship (FIVB)

China, June 3, 2005 - A total of six teams advanced to
the second round of 2006 Men’s World Championship after
the last Asian first round tournament - Group A was
completed in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates on
Thursday.
The six teams are Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Thailand,
Uzbekistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They
will join Korea, China, Iran, India, Australia and
Kazakhstan who participate in the second round directly,
to vie for the five berths available to Asia in the
final round of the World Championship in 2006 in Japan.
In the first round, Asia Group C was held in the
Philippines from March 2-6, with Chinese Taipei and
Indonesia finishing one and two while Thailand finished
first in Group B which was held May 20-22, followed by
Uzbekistan. Qatar and the United Arab Emirates placed
first and second in Asian Group A.
Chinese Taipei and the United Arab Emirates will head to
Almaty of Kazakhstan to play the host team and Korea in
Group D in the second round from June 17-19. Qatar will
play against Australia, Iran and Uzbekistan in Group F
from June 22-24 in Tehran, while first round advancers
Thailand and Indonesia will be in India for the second
round together with India and China in Group E from June
24-26.
The winner of each Group will book tickets to Japan and
the three second placed teams will enter a playoff
tournament from July 1-3 to decide which two teams will
collect the final two tickets to the final round.
