Czech Republic join Serbia & Montenegro in third round (FIVB)

13, 2005 – The third and final 2006 Women’s World
Championship second round tournament in Europe was
completed on Monday with the Czech Republic confirming
their spot in the third round after finishing second to
Serbia and Montenegro, who were guaranteed a top two
finish and hence a third round spot as early as Sunday,
in Europe Pool F in Zagreb.
The final day of the tournament saw Czech Republic beat
the hosts Croatia 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 28-26) while Serbia
and Montenegro beat Slovakia 3-1 (25-17, 28-26, 21-25,
25-21) for their third victory in as many matches to top
the group, followed by the Czech Republic, who suffered
one defeat, and Slovakia and Croatia who suffered two
and three defeats respectively.
Serbia and Montenegro, ranked 28th in the world and
Croatia (39) joined Greece, the Ukraine, Azerbaijan and
Belgium, who are on a superb run having also advanced
from the first round, as teams to have advanced into the
third round.
Greece and Serbia and Montenegro are now confirmed to
play against each other in a third round tournament in
Dresdan from June 17-19 with Germany and Poland
completing the tournament, while the Czech Republic now
have a third round date with Russia, Bulgaria and
Azerbaijan in Moscow from July 1-3.
The third and final third round tournament in Europe
sees the Ukraine play Turkey, the Netherlands and
Belgium in Ankara from August 5-7.
All three tournaments are offering two tickets into the
final round with the third placed teams having the
chance to play off for the seventh and final European
ticket to Japan in 2006.
