2006 World Championships

06/18/2005
Bridgetown,
Barbados, June 18, 2005 – Barbados women maintained
their top ranking at the 2006 Women's World Championship
first round tournament - Norceca Pool B by defeating
Dominica, 25-18, 25-16, 25-16, on day two of the
tournament on Saturday which was played here at the
Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Bridgetown.
With captain Anthazia Yearwood being absent as she was
getting married on the day of the match, vice captain,
six-foot Annette Chapman led from the front with a game
high 12 kills to carry Barbados within one set of
advancing to the second round. Avara Brown contributed
eight kills.
Dominica who had pipped St. Kitts in five sets on day
one only remained in contention through the efforts of
Samantha Smith who scored 11 kills. However, the
all-round performance of the Bajans proved too powerful
for Dominica. Earlier St. Kitts rebounded from the day
one loss by thumping Anguilla, 25-21, 27-25, 25-13.
Barbados just needs one set from the final match against
St. Kitts to book the ticket to round two of the World
Championships.
