06/18/2005
Dresden,
Germany, June 18, 2005 – World number 10 Poland are on
the verge of booking themselves a spot in the Final
Round of the 2006 Women’s World Championship after
winning their second match in as many games at the Third
Round tournament - Europe Group I in Dresden.
Poland, who fought back superbly to beat Serbia and
Montenegro 3-2 (15-25, 21-25, 25-11, 25-20, 15-13) on
Saturday, lead the four-team tournament ahead of Germany,
who beat Greece 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-14), and Serbia
and Montenegro, who have 1-1 records. Greece, who is the
only side with no chance of advancing after two matches,
is bottom of the table having yet to win a match.
The top two sides will advance to the Final Round while
the third placed team will enter a play off for another
berth.
While Poland showed amazing determination to snatch
victory out of the hands of giant killers Serbia and
Montenegro, Germany kept their Final Round chances alive,
sharing second position with Serbia and Montenegro
behind leaders, Poland.
The final day on Sunday sees Serbia and Montenegro play
Greece at 10:30 (local time) followed by Germany vs.
Poland at 13:00.
