2006 World Championships
Iran hoping to follow in Kazakhstan’s footsteps (FIVB)
06/21/2005
June
21, 2005 – World number 23 Iran will host Australia
(22), Qatar (37) and Uzbekistan starting on Wednesday in
a three-day 2006 Men’s World Championship second round –
Asia Pool F in Teheran, hoping to emulate Kazakhstan,
who advanced to the final round from their second round
tournament last weekend.
Teheran is the second of three Asian second round
tournaments with Kazakhstan having claimed the first of
five available tickets to the final round. Korea, who
finished second behind Kazakhstan, advanced to a playoff
for two final round tickets which will involve the
second placed team in Teheran and another from another
second round tournament in India later this week. Pic: Uzbekistan will play in Iran after finishing
second in a first round tournament in Thailand in May
Iran, playing on home soil, will start favourites but
Australia, who are ranked one place higher, aren’t far
behind, especially considering they participated in the
Olympic Games last year and have recently tasted World
Championship final round action having finished 19th in
the 2002 edition.
Qatar arrived in this group having won their first round
tournament while Uzbekistan confirmed their spot in the
second round by finishing second in their first round
event.
