2006 World Championships
Australia seal final round spot after victory over India (FIVB)
07/02/2005
Chennai,
India, July 2, 2005 – Following Friday’s 3-1 (25-22,
27-29, 25-16, 27-25) defeat to Korea, world number 22
Australia bounced back in style with a 3-0 (25-18,
25-17, 25-17) win over India to guarantee themselves a
top two spot in the three-team 2006 Men’s World
Championship Asian playoff tournament.
The top two sides from this tournament will be confirmed
in the final round in Japan next year and after taking a
set off Korea, ranked 10th in the world, on Friday,
Australia can not finish worse than second.
Sunday’s last match of the tournament sees India (26th)
play Korea in a must win match for the hosts. Korea need
to win only one set to advance so a 3-0 result to India
is the only one which will see them progress.
All three teams finished second in their respective
second round tournaments in Asia before joining this
play off tournament for the chance to claim the last two
of Asia’s five vacancies in the 2006 Men’s World
Championship final round.
Australia joins Kazakhstan, China and Iran (Asian third
round winners), Argentina (South America first round
winner), Egypt (Africa second round winner), Japan
(hosts) and Brazil (defending champions) as the number
of teams confirmed in the final round has reached eight.
