2006 World Championships
Brazil, Peru & Argentina in contention for two final round spots (FIVB)
08/27/2005
Cabo
Frio, Brazil, August 27, 2005 – A 3-0 (25-20, 25-19,
25-20) win over Argentina on Saturday has kept Peru’s
chances of claiming a 2006 Women’s World Championship
final round spot alive as they moved to a 2-1 win-loss
record for the South America first round tournament –
Pool A.
World Grand Prix champions Brazil, who had the bye on
Saturday, have practically booked themselves a spot
already with a 3-0 record but Argentina (2-1) and Peru
can join Brazil at the top of the table after Sunday’s
matches.
With the top two teams advancing to the final round,
Argentina must beat Brazil while Peru must beat Uruguay
(1-3), who beat Ecuador 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-23) on
Saturday, to move to the top of the table but with
Brazil’s set and point ratio so strong it is effectively
down to a race for the second ticket.
South America has only two vacancies in the final round
of the 2006 Women’s World Championship.
