Japan’s teams dressed for battle
10/10/2006
Tokyo, October 10, 2006: A phoenix flying towards victory and the outline of an ancient suit of armour…both these themes have been incorporated into the uniforms of Japan’s teams for the FIVB World Championships.

The women’s uniform, supplied by Mizuno, includes the emblem of the mythical Chinese phoenix (or “houou” in Japanese) on the side of the shirt, under the right arm. It represents fire and passion, the same qualities the women’s team will show in their attempts to win a medal. On the back of the shirt, white lines form the outline of the wings of the phoenix.

The men’s uniform, supplied by Asics, is based on a traditional suit of armour, or “yoroi” in Japanese. The design incorporates gold and silver lines representing the shoulder protection of the warriors and the sword. On the back of the shirt, lines symbolize the famous Mount Fuji.
