Teams prepare for the final countdown

Tokyo, October 19, 2006: Months of trans-continental communication and coordination between the World Championships Organizing Committee in Tokyo and national federations around the world are about to come to fruition.

Thanks to the efforts of the Organizing Committee's training camp coordination department, many of the teams taking part in the 2006 FIVB World Championships will soon be setting up base around Japan.

It will be their final stage of preparation before they head to their respective venues on October 29 for the first round of the women’s event, which starts October 31.

All 48 teams ? 24 in both the women’s and men’s events ? were asked if they needed logistical assistance from the Organizing Committee in setting up a training camp in Japan.

Some of them have made their own arrangements with Japanese clubs or universities, but many others have taken advantage of the service provided by the training camp coordination department.

As a result, 10 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams have received direct assistance from the Organizing Committee, including transportation, accommodation, training halls and international exchanges. In total, 40 of the 48 teams will finetune their preparations at extended camps around Japan.

In addition to the 10 cities staging the 208 matches, a further eight local governments have come forward to serve as hosts for the camps.

Executive Tournament Director Katsumi Wakao is convinced the thorough preparations will be in evidence on the court.

“This is a new situation, with a record number of teams holding training camps in Japan before the World Championships,” he said.

“I am sure that the ability and the quality of the teams will come up as a result of these preparations.”
